Almost everyone arrives at their first session with an image borrowed from television: a swinging pendulum, someone barking on a stage, a will switched off. It is worth clearing up early, because that fear is the most common reason people never try something that might help.
You do not lose control
In clinical hypnosis you are conscious throughout. You hear, you understand, you can speak, and you can stand up and leave if you want to. Nobody can make you say or do anything that goes against your values: if something is suggested that you do not accept, it simply does not happen.
The closest everyday equivalent is driving a familiar route and arriving without remembering the journey, or being so absorbed in a film that you forget where you are. Attention tightly focused in one place, and very relaxed everywhere else.
You do not fall asleep either
The word hypnosis comes from the Greek for sleep, and that is where the confusion started. The body does relax deeply, but the mind is more awake and receptive than usual. Many people finish saying they cannot have been hypnotised because they remember everything — which is precisely why they were.
What you will notice
Most commonly a physical sense of heaviness or lightness, time passing differently — an hour that feels like fifteen minutes — and a calm that surprises many people by how quickly it arrives.
With anxiety, that calm is not the goal but the doorway: it is the state from which the alert pattern keeping the nervous system switched on can actually be worked with.
If doubt is what is holding you back, the free twenty-minute consultation exists for exactly that: to ask, with no commitment, before deciding anything.
